As far as interior design is concerned, laundry rooms are usually neglected. If the room serves its purpose, then why bother decorating it in the first place?
Having said that, providing the laundry room in your home with a slight makeover can improve both its function and form. When determining what needs improving or cleaning this summer, consider the following three items. You’ll end up having a clean laundry room as a result, simplifying your life in the process.
Laundry Room Cabinets Should Be Installed to Organize Everyday Essentials
If you want to have your supplies organized instead of scattered across various shelves, you wouldn’t be the only one. The average laundry room has a shelf that floats over the washer/dryer. Most people assume that they don’t need anything more than that.
The fact of the matter is that laundry room cabinets can significantly improve the room’s flow. Whether you are storing dryer sheets and detergent away, or hanging up drying racks and ironing boards, cabinetry can upgrade any laundry room.
When personalizing either white shaker cabinetry or gray raised panels, think about features that would be capable of improving your life. If you have a large family, then large base cabinetry can store your sorting bins. That will simplify the process of separating delicates, lights, and darks. If a majority of your clothing is air-dried, consider hanging some kind of bar directly under the upper cabinets. They will replace a drying rack if you have one in your home.
Maintain Your Ducts and Dryer Vents to Stay Safe and Save Time
If you have been emptying the lint filter right after each of your loads, well done. You should be doing it every three loads or so, at a minimum. Regardless, you are aware of how fast lint is capable of building up. Lint can also escape into ducts and dryer vents. As such, it is imperative that you clean them right out annually, at the very least. Sadly, many of us neglect our ducts and vents up until the point where dryers stop working. If they are not regularly cleaned out, clogged lint could trigger a burn out of a dryer’s heating element. A fire might even ensue.
Things don’t have to escalate that far, though – simply maintain your dryer properly. Spring will be the perfect time to have your ducts and vents cleaned, since you’re probably already doing some spring cleaning. To begin with, check the exterior opening to see if there are obstructions lying around, such as animal nests and leaves. Any debris lingering should be removed, especially if it is blocking the opening of the vent. You can then have lint removed with either an air compressor, flexible brush, or vacuum hose. After everything has cleared up, the dryer will likely work better. You’ll also be less inclined to be to run your load through another cycle.
Keep the Room That Keeps You Clean Tidy
Most of the cleaning in your house happens in your laundry room. Sometimes, though, homeowners forget that appliances and the room itself requires a cleaning from time to time. It is imperative that you clean the laundry room routinely – specifically, appliances and surfaces – for the sake of letting them run on a continuous basis. That is the only way they can keep you tidy and clean. Also, white shaker cabinetry looks better when they are shining! Consider the following tasks if they are not already on your to-do list:
- White vinegar should be run through your washer in order to keep things fresh. Vinegar happens to be quite acidic. As such, it is perfect for dissolving the buildup of soap scum.
- Your washer/dryer should be pulled out for the sake of vacuuming around and behind them. Some places are difficult to reach, so you’ll need to have them slid out once in a while. In doing so, you might discover a bunch of missing socks!
- Although those appliances may be a safe distance away from your wall, this opportunity should be used to have the entire exterior wiped down.
- A mix of water and baking soda should be used to push mineral deposits away. This mix will also eliminate spray starch built up on iron.
- Supplies should be taken down. A cleaner and a cloth should be used to wipe shelves and cabinetry down inside out.
